Performance exhaust systems increase engine power by decreasing exhaust back pressure. During the piston stroke, the exhaust valve opens at the beginning of the exhaust stroke and the the piston pushes the exhaust gases out of the cylinder. The less resistance the piston has exhausting those gases, the more power generated by that stroke.
Although mufflers have different external shapes, the internal designs fall under two basic categories. One is a chambered design. A chamber design is a hollow shell with little “rooms” that capture and reflect the sound around inside the muffler to give the vehicle a loud echo type sound. The sound also bounces around inside the chamber causing sound frequencies to intersect and cancel each other out. Each internal design has different "sound canceling" qualities that produce different tones. Chamber mufflers have very little back pressure which allows the engine to breathe easier, therefore increasing the engine’s performance and efficiency. Flow Pro, V-Force and Flowmaster are chamber design formats that are highly recognized in the racing arena.
The other is a “flow through” design”. These mufflers do not have chambers. Instead they are nothing more than a straight piece of perforated tubing that travels directly through the muffler from one end to the other. The perforated holes in the tube allow the sound from the exhaust to escape into the muffler chamber that is “packed” with sound absorbing filler that absorbs the sound. The size of the perforated holes and the type of packing inside the muffler have a direct effect on the tone of the muffler. The tone, which is controlled and muffled, varies greatly from the echoing chamber style muffler. This muffler also increases engine performance and efficiency. Xlerator by Georlich, or Magnaflow are flow through formats that have captured the ear of performance experts around the world.
